Over the past eighty-nine years Whitby Town have had some amazing goal keepers David Campbell, Neville Pybus, Paddy Kenny, Harold Lodge to name but a few and now the amazing Shane Bland. But what happens when your Number One is injured during a match, unavailable at the last minute or injured with no other keeper on the books.

Most recently Jason Blackburn, a forward, signed at the beginning of the 2015/2016 season made his debut on 26th August 2015 against Ramsbottom United in a league game. Shane Bland was injured in the 55th minute and with no keeper named on the bench Jason donned the Number One shirt and kept a clean sheet. From the radio commentary he did made a couple of good saves ... with his feet.

When Nick Liversedge was dismissed in November 2008, in the final two minutes Richard Foster donned the gloves and kept a clean sheet.

Against Ilkeston in March 2008, Cammy was sent off in the 62nd minute and Ashley Lyth put on Cammy's yellow shirt.

Against Marine in December 2005 when Cammy suffered a torn ligament Scott Nicholson took over.

September 2003 and Mark Riches was injured in the 12th minute against Ashton United it was down to Mark Obern to take over the gloves. It was Marks second ever game for the Blues.

When David Campbell was injured the in the 44th minute against Bishop Auckland on 16th April 2003 Defender David Campbell replace him, but that wasn't the only game Goochie played in the following game Goochie played in goal against Colwyn Bay on Apil 21st.

Not quite in the same vein, back on 10th October 2000 Whitby were away at Worksop Town. Cammy was suspended and Dawson was unavailable. So the Blues traveled and signed a keeper called Kevin Tye. It was Kevin's only game for the Blues but as far as we know Kevin signed from Worksop Town.

The next recorded replacement of a keeper was on May 3rd, 1995 when Whitby entertained West Auckland Town. Paul Robinson was sent off in the 71st minute and then Woods was replaced by Matthew Coddington, Matthew being the Blues other keeper.

Matthew Codding was replaced himself against Easington Colliery (23/01/1993) in the 61st minute and was replaced by Stephen Moore, (also a keeper).

Steve Balcombe replaced David Harvey in the 53rd minute when Harvey was injured against Guisborough Town on March 5th, 1986 and kept a clean sheet.

Dave Richardson came off the bench against Bishop Auckland in the 31st minute as David Coleby was injured.

David Coleby was injured in the 71st minute on December 5th, 1981 and was replaced by Tony Harrington (whether Harrington went in goal is unknown).

David Coleby was dismissed for fighting with Collingwood of Bishop Auckland on August 29th, 1981 and was to serve a 14 days suspension but it was Tony Escritt that came to the rescue by going i goal on the day.

Back in October 1976 Coleby was stretchered off in the 30th minute of the FA Cup game against Barrow. Just who replaced him no one knows as yet (likely if he was playing it may have been Fred McFadden).

Indeed it was McFadden that had previously replaced Coleby in May 1976 when he was injured.

Against Ashington in January 1974 Alan McCloy (outfield and keeper) replaced Stephen Wright when he was injured in the 30th minute.

An article about Whitby's keepers would not be complete without mentioning the goal keeping coach Mr. Denis Wheeler. There is already a post here about the man himself.
